Part of a series of Orlando’s great buildings from the past and present.
The American Federal Building was built in 1963, originally as a wonderfully modern two-story structure with a round concrete brise soleil. In later years, five stories with glass walls were added to the roof, which in my opinion diminished the unique flavor of the initial design. Eventually the building was demolished to make room for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, though some of the exterior concrete pieces were saved for future display.
In the background is Orlando’s old City Hall, another mid-century building built in 1958, which was famously detonated on camera in 1991 for Lethal Weapon 3.
