This is architect Kenneth Lind’s Platform House in Pacific Palisades, built in 1949. I have an appreciation of many architectural styles, but mid-century house design might just take the cake with its blend of simplified geometry, economy, minimalism, inventiveness, and charm.
I saw this photo of Platform House built into the side of a hill and wanted to try a loose interpretation of it. I ended up restricting myself with a small canvas size to work more concisely (when you have a huge canvas that lets you zoom in to obsess over tiny details…you obsess over tiny details). It was also just straight ahead drawing without a sketch, which made the drawing and end result feel a little more free.
